The 332nd Fighter Group was a unit of the Twelfth and Fifteenth Air Forces based in Italy in World War II. It was composed of African-American pilots and ground support personnel trained at Tuskegee, AL and the members of the group became collectively known as the Tuskegee Airmen. The standards to become a member of this group were set higher than they were for white applicants, however, many Tuskegee applicants surpassed even those higher requirements and they served in action with distinction. If you know of any members of this group who were from New Orleans, other than Walter Downs (below), I'd appreciate it if you'd let me know. Nancy |
